Australia will not change proposed laws that would make Facebook and Alphabet Inc’s Google pay news outlets for content, according to a senior lawmaker on Monday.

Facebook strongly protested the laws. And last week has blocked all news content and the majority of emergency and government accounts.

Australian leaders and the social media giant continued discussing the changes over the weekend.Despite the vocal opposition from Facebook and Google, Google inked deals with top Australian outlets last week.

“There’s no reason Facebook can’t do and achieve what Google already has,”  Simon Birmingham, Australia’s Minister for Finance, told Australian Broadcasting Corp Radio.
