Twitter a goldmine for tracking consumer mood on price, according to the Bank of Italy

The Bank of Italy said on Monday a set of experimental indicators it created from millions of tweets that accurately tracked consumer mood on prices; being able to offer a scope for a new and efficient monetary policy tool.

Researchers identified their indicators, based on millions of tweets by Italy’s national statistics office and other forecasters provided more granular detail to the experiment.

The effort came as policy-makers around the world have increasingly turned on more to social media and unconventional sources to measure consumer behaviour as inflation continues to defy targets set by plenty of leading central banks.

Twitter has roughly 200 million active users and has turned around 10 million active users in Italy in 2019, according to the authors. The analysis started through collecting 11 million tweets posted in Italian between the June of 2013 and December 2019. The collected tweets contain at least one of a set of previously selected words that are related to prices, inflation and price dynamics.

The remaining dataset was used to build two indexes: expectations of decreasing or increasing inflation done by measuring the daily volume of tweets containing previously selected word combinations such as “very high price” or “bargain price”.And the final set of indicators were then created based on divergence between the two indexes.

The authors stated that their work highlighted the significance and policy implications of information contained on social networks but also acknowledged further study was necessary to interpret the data.

Apple said in a support document that “A very small number of customers with Apple Watch Series 5 or Apple Watch SE models running watchOS 7.2 or 7.3 have experienced an issue with their watch not charging after it enters Power Reserve,”.

Apple has released watchOS 7.3.1 on Monday. This update could help fix the issue that prevents some Apple Watch Series SE or 5 smartwatches from charging during the battery-saving Power Reserve Mode. And if it doesn’t work in the recent update for at least 30 minutes, you can contact Apple Support to set up a free mail-in repair, then they will have to inspect your watch to “verify that it is eligible for repair”.

The watch OS 7.3.1 update is available now for download.

How good storytelling helps you design great products

0
Art by Alex Sevilla

One of the biggest dilemmas that product teams face is confusing designs that actually work well with designs that look great. It may seem like a basic mistake but it can cause grave consequences: If your product does not work well, no one will care how it looks.

Story-centered design

Focusing on how a product works means crafting stories that show how the customers will interact with a product; only after sharing the story is where the inclusion of visual enhancers become a way to tell that narrative of interaction.

The process of designing through story

In story-centered design, the team critiques work by looking at sequential mockups that serve as frames like a filmstrip. Designers would present the sentences the customers read, every screen that system generates in response. The design follows a customer from an initial trigger all the way  to completing a specific goal. These techniques work for a variety of platforms banking websites, food business sites, analytics dashboards and beyond.

Story-centered design is similar to test-driven development. Instead of writing tests to exercise code, teams create stories to exercise designs. Story-centered design can have a great impact on a team’s product quality and execution speed.

How story-centered design works well

Problems are spotted early on

Story-centered design allows teams a system for making design decisions based on how users experience a product. And stories make it easier to notice when prompts don’t set the proper expectations. All these tiny details make up to better usability and customer engagement.

Clarifies design goals

This approach forces creators to come to an agreement on the design goals before proceeding to the details. This is helpful because there will be a concise vision of the set goals on whether the designs accomplish the established team vision.

Efficient data collection

Navigating through the customer experience and through finishing a goal maps well makes story-centered design all the more efficient for collecting business-related data. Stories make it easier to check that you have all the essential elements to encourage user behavior.

Speeds things up

Stories can be reused and enhanced. Mockups created prior can be repurposed into a quick prototype for user studies. The same narrative outline can be used to build a funnel analysis that helps teams find out whether people are making it through the story in the live product.

The UAE reaches Mars with the Hope Probe

The Hope probe from the United Arab Emirates successfully reached Mars on Tuesday, February 9,2020. This earns the country a spot in a small group of spacefaring powers that have successfully sent spacecraft to study the fourth planet from the sun.

The UAE hopes that the mission could help answer key questions  “about the Martian atmosphere and the loss of hydrogen and oxygen gases into space over the span of one Martian year”. The UAE also hopes the mission would yield key discoveries on Martian weather patterns and catalyse a new technology sector as it looks to wean its economy from oil dependence.
