Ethereum hits record high, lifted by growing institutional interest

Cryptocurrency Ethereum hit a record high on Thursday, lifted by growing institutional interest in the space, and more than a week after its futures were launched on the Chicago Mercantile exchange.

The second largest cryptocurrency , in terms of market capitalisation, reached an all-time peak of $1,938 and was last up 4.6% at $1,936.94.

Increase in institutional participation in cryptocurrencies also propelled Ethereum’s rival and the largest crypto asset Bitcoin to an all-time peak of $53,640 on Wednesday.

“Ethereum is really undervalued, and I believe it has been … due to its more complex narrative,” said co-founder of Aragon Luis Cuende, a decentralised application on the ethereum blockchain.

As Nyan Cat turns 10 this year, a one-of-a kind edition of the beloved GIF goes up for auction. The artist behind the iconic cat Chris Torres has remastered the original animation and will be selling it through the crypto art platform Foundation. The auction starts at 1pm ET and will run for 24 hours.

Crypto art is starting to get popular over the recent years. There are now a number of digital marketplaces such as SuperRare and Nifty Gateway- where collectors can purchase and sell digital artworks.

Crypto artworks are generally sold through “non-fungible tokens” that are unique digital tokens on a blockchain and verify ownership of a piece. That means there is an element of speculation and investment when buying crypto art since you can resell a work for profit in the future.

Android 12 developer preview is available now

Google released a developer preview for the next version of Android-Android 12 for Pixel devices on Thursday. As a norm for Google, the very initial previews of Android are full of a lot of developer-facing changes. Android 12 has updates that show how the OS handles videos, images and future security updates.

Another norm for Google is to hold some of the key UI changes in reserve for the Google I/O conference, which is typically held in May. However,  this particular developer preview does include some changes to the UI for notifications.

There will be a public beta soon , but it would take a few more months. And if Google follows its habits, there will be a more comprehensive preview at what’s coming for Android in the coming months.

Youtube TV offers HBO MAX, Starz and Showtime for $5 less in new bundle

Youtube TV is rolling out a new entertainment bundle that will save customers $5. The optional package is $30 a month. Individually, HBO Max costs 15 a month, Starz is $9 a month and Showtime is $11 a month.

While the bundle is an easy way to save 5$ each month, Youtube has gotten much more expensive over the last year. Youtube TV increased its monthly price from $50 to $65.

The move came right after Youtube signed a distribution agreement with ViacomCBS to carry a suite of Channels: Comedy Central,Nickelodeon, and Paramount Network among others.

At least Youtube TV customers can enjoy three of the premium cable networks.

WhatsApp explains its privacy policy to users

WhatsApp sets a new plan to further explain its contentious privacy policy because users grew concerned that the platform would share their messages with WhatsApp’s parent company Facebook.

In an announcement on Thursday, the company explained how users can read through the new policy and learn how personal and business messages are handled.

The new privacy policy concerns messaging businesses on WhatsApp and what parts of your data the businesses have access to. However, WhatsApp allows users to message businesses and such messages aren’t extended the same protections.

WhatsApp’s privacy policy was seen as an attempt to explain the change, but the majority of users interpreted it as WhatsApp comprising the privacy focus it was known for.

NASA’s Perseverance rover lands successfully on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance rover has successfully landed on the surface of Mars. Perseverance survived a blazing seven-minute plunge through the Martian atmosphere. The rover made a clean landing, which sets the stage for a year’s journey to scour Mars’ Jezero Crater for ancient signs of life.

The landing at 3:55PM ET marks NASA’s sixth triumphant landing on the Red Planet. The rover is worth $2.7 billion and is essentially a 2,263-pound lab on wheels; for the next several years.

The Jezero Crater posed as the most challenging landing site NASA has encountered. Perseverance had to steer clear of the crater’s massive boulders and dangerous sandy pits to reach its landing point. Scientists believe that the 28-mile-wide crater used to be a river delta 3.5 billion years ago- a potential goldmine for fossilised microorganisms.

Microsoft unveils Office 2021

Microsoft announced two new versions of Office today: the Office LTSC for commercial consumers and a consumer office 2021 version.

Office 2021 will be available later this year for both macOS and Windows. The Office 2021 is designed for those who don’t want to subscribe to the cloud-powered Microsoft 365 variants.

Microsoft has not yet fully detailed all the features in Office 2021 yet, but the Office LTSC ( Long-Term Servicing Channel) variant will include things such as accessibility improvements, support and Dark mode, and features such as XLOOKUP in Excel.

Microsoft plans to release a preview of Office LTSC in April, with the full release coming later this year. Though the consumer Office 2021 variant won’t be available in preview. Both new Office variants will ship with OneNote and include 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

Youtube TV adds 4k streaming and offline downloads

Youtube TV announced that in the coming weeks, the service will “introduce a new add-on package with 4K streaming, offline viewing, and unlimited concurrent streams at home.”

It is not clear whether there would be limits on which channels, nor is YouTube giving examples of what type of content will be available in 4K. Currently, customers have a maximum of three concurrent streams, but it seems like Youtube will be removing those constraints so long as you are watching from home.

Offline viewing is pretty rare in streaming TV apps.Hulu lets you download its tv shows and movies but not for its live TV service while Sling TV offers no such functionality.

Youtube TV raised its base subscription last June and the service has over 3 million subscribers.

Facebook’s Oculus rolls out multiuser support

Facebook announced on Thursday that it is now rolling out multiuser support as the experimental feature for Oculus Quest 2 headset.

The primary account holder will be allowed to add up three additional accounts to one device.

In addition, Facebook is rolling out app sharing as an experimental feature for the Quest 2, which will allow accounts in one device to access the apps that are owned by the primary account holder.

Though not all apps support app sharing just yet. It will work with new apps in the Quest Store. Facebook said ” a little number of existing games will not yet be available through App Sharing unless players purchase their own copy.”

SolarWinds hackers studied Microsoft source code for authentication

On Thursday, Microsoft said in a blog post that its internal investigation found the hackers studied parts of the source code instructions for its Azure cloud programs. The source code instructions are related to security and identity and Intune management for mobile applications and devices.

Some hacking also used such methods at targets that did not use SolarWinds.

Initially discovered by FireEye Inc, a security provider , the hackers used advanced skills to insert software back doors for spying into widely used network-management programs distributed by SolarWinds Corp.

Ultimately, the problems with identity management proved so pervasive in the recent attacks that multiple security companies issued new warnings and guidelines for detecting misuse.
